The Boogie Down Ascension of Astro Black is truly about movement. The piece is performative in the sense that it mimics stills I screenshotted from a video of me dancing. It was to an instrumental by one of my favorite Hip Hop artists, Quasimoto. Lord Quas is actually one of rapper Madlib’s alter egos; a small cartoon who engages in deviant activities and smokes cigarettes. I am enamored by the idea of displaying multiple characters as one’s opposing emotions, and employ this in my artwork often through these translucent figures that overlap. I wanted this painting to convey movement and rhythm, and believe I have succeeded in this effort. The spectrum of color also provides a motion aspect as it transforms from cooler and darker tones to warmer, representing the shift in my mood as I listen to music and through the video as well.
